Tiwhiri 3- Unpacking a book
This post looks at Te Whakamahere-specifically planning a single lesson using a simple 'unpacking' process.
It can take a while to suss out/get a better understanding of planning in the initial years of teaching. It can be really confusing and overwhelming and although there are awesome texts these days to help teachers, it can be information overload especially on top of daily mahi.
So where to start?
The following whakapapa outlines the macro-whānui through to micro-whāiti:(naming varies from kura to kura but kiko is similar):
Mahere ā Kura: Curriculum
Mahere ā Tau: Annual/Long Term Plan
Mahere ā Wāhanga: Term Plan
Mahere ā Kaupapa: Unit Plan
Mahere ā Wiki: Weekly Plan
Mahere Ako: Lesson Plan
The focus of this post is the Mahere Ako-Lesson Plan😜 and the following is a process you can use to 'unpack' a book:
Unpack!
1. Me Kanohi Hōmiromiro
- Analyse the reo/kai-what unique features are there?
3. Kūmamatanga
- How can I draw in/entice/connect tamariki to/with the text?
- What prior knowledge do tamariki have?
3. Hai wero
- What questions can I pose to challenge/check comprehension/highlight language features?
4. Ngohe Whakaū
- What activities can I utilise to consolidate/practice/strengthen/develop understanding?
To better demonstration the above, we'll use a different 'Ngā Kete Kōrero' book and focus level each week to unpack and complete a lesson plan.
